Beautifully handcrafted sweetgrass basket featuring a distinctive coiled “beehive” style design. This traditional basket reflects the rich basket-making heritage of the Gullah Geechee people of the Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia.
According to the information accompanying the basket, it was handwoven by Sarah Green and members of her family. Sarah Green and her family’s baskets were sold Monday through Sunday at the corner of Ford Street and Meeting Street in Charleston, South Carolina.
About Gullah Geechee Basketry
Gullah Geechee basket making has deep roots in West African traditions brought to America by enslaved Africans. These baskets were originally created as practical tools, particularly for agricultural work such as winnowing rice, and over generations the craft evolved into a highly respected and collectible art form.
This basket is traditionally constructed using natural materials including sweetgrass, rush, palmetto fronds, and pine needles, carefully coiled and woven by hand.
